Paratissima Skopje – Carolin Koss

Skup najrazličitijih umetnika na jednom mestu

Priredile: Teodora Kovrlija i Gorjana Jordanovska

EN: Your impressions from the International Fair for Contemporary Art Paratissima Skopje, if this was your first participation and how are you satisfied with the organization?

CAROLIN: I was impressed by the International Fair for Contemporary Art Paratissima Skopje, which created a platform where national Macedonian and international artists could exhibit together and meet. It is the second time I participated, but the first time I was able to come in person. Already last year the communication beforehand was really good and I got the feeling the organisation takes well care about the art and the artists, so I am glad I managed to come this year and that I got to know the Macedonians and Skopje!

SR: PREDSTAVITE SE UKRATKO NAŠIM ČITAOCIMA I ISPRIČAJTE NEŠTO O KONCEPTU VAŠEG
NASTUPA?

EN: Introduce yourself briefly to our readers and tell us about the concept of your performance? What was there for the audience to see?

CAROLIN: I am a Helsinki based artist and filmmaker originally from Germany. My video works are usually of a dreamlike and contemplative nature and capitative through symbolic language and stylised imagery. With my latest works I tried to raise environmental awareness and explored the human essence and the collective sub-consciousness. The film I showed at Paratissima is called “Plastic Child” and is about a journey of a child who lives in a contaminated plastic world. Being the heir of a single living plant gives him the air to breath and eventually delivers hope for human kind. The film is part of a trilogy called Emerald Green, which is about a dystopian world, where nature has been rendered extinct, breathable air has gotten scarce and the sun has vanished due to exploitation of natural resources and human error.

EN: What was your inspiration for participating at the festival?

CAROLIN: I already discovered the festival last year and got the feeling it is a really open-minded and young spirited organisation. Applying was very easy, so I took a chance. Generally I am also very interested in discovering places I know little about, which was in that case Macedonia. So after visiting there, I am glad Macedonia is not a blind spot on my map anymore, on the opposite it became a place with great memories and sympathy for it’s warm-hearted people, which makes me want to visit again!

EN: Have you had a chance to take part in a similar festival or fair in your country or abroad and how such events helps promoting the artists and their connection and mutual collaboration for the future?

CAROLIN: I barely have participated in an art festival before, where so many different art forms were represented. In times where cultures mix and all the possibilities are constantly laid out, I think it just feels right to also have art festivals where all the different art forms meet, mix and exchange. I also consider myself working on the interface of art and filmmaking as well as having a background in music and performance. So for me it feels very natural and inspiring to be surrounded by all these different type of art forms and ways of expressions.

EN: What impression did you get from the other participants? Who made the deepest impression? Which fellow artist will you praise?

CAROLIN: I was surprised by the high quality of the art works and I especially liked the performance by Vittoria De Ferrari Sapetto, which was extremely powerful and meaningful in its message. I also enjoyed watching and listening to THE YET art and sound collective, their bold partially improvised performances, expanding the borders between art and sound.

EN: The theme of this issue of “Plezir magazine” is “adventure”, and that’s why it interest me, what was your greatest adventure so far in a professional sense and whether nowadays you need a certain amount of adventurism if you engage in art?

CAROLIN: I think as an adventurer you are curious by nature, interested in the unknown. Same goes for the artist. Creating is like packing your bag with all your skills and a small survival kit, because you got curious in a sound, a smell, a message, a colour, a structure, a thought or all together. You don’t really know about the destination, but you sense a direction and start marching over sticks and stones, mud and water, sand and fields, hills and mountains to search for its origin and see what you can do out of it. Indeed making art is like going on an adventurous journey, never knowing where it takes you, but learning and picking up a lot along the way.
